A garden in layers, Great Dunmow

Project photographs

Using levels to shape the garden

Broad steps wrap around the terrace in this Great Dunmow garden, connecting the paved seating area with the lawn. The steps make the change in level part of the design, rather than treating it as a separate obstacle.

Timber screening, white raised borders and clipped trees define the edges of the space. The photographs show how a limited palette can bring structure to a garden while leaving room for planting and everyday use.
